Rifugio Prategiano lies 750 metres above sea-level on the slopes of the "Poggio di Montieri", minutes from the village of the same name, Montieri. At this altitude one enjoys a refreshing climate, even in the hottest summer months.


The Farm

From here there is a panoramic view of the seemingly endless, untouched hilly landscape of the Alta Maremma. The variety of animal and plant worlds is awe-inspiring. One can experience various landscapes such as the thick, native chestnut and oak forests, the typical Tuscan scenery of olive groves, vineyards, pines and cypresses, as well as the evergreen plant world of the Mediterranean "Macchia". However, the region around medieval Montieri is not only an oasis for nature lovers. If you are also interested in culture and history, you will find this an ideal base for exciting outings to the most beautiful sights in Tuscany. From this unique location between three Tuscan provinces, it is not far to the famous towns of Florence, Volterra, Pisa, Massa Marittima, San Gimignano or Siena. The numerous small, medieval villages in the immediate area, through which few travellers venture, are particularly fascinating.

Telephone, television, shower and toilet in all 20 rooms ensure a comfortable stay. (If you want to be close to the horses all the time, you may stay in the simply-furnished riders' quarters above the stalls).

Our cook, of course, spoils us with typical Tuscan meals accompanied by excellent wines of the region. One should also not miss the midday picnics. Rifugio Prategiano is the central meeting point for bike riders, horse-back riders, hikers and others who would like to make the most of our picnic bus. Of course, an international, and in part English-speaking, team will help with open air lunches air of appetizers, main courses, cheeses, wines and coffee.

Discovery Week

Are you not sure whether "happiness is being on horse-back"? Then why not give it a try? With experienced help you will be fluent in the important fundamentals of trail riding after 12 hours in the saddle. As soon as you are comfortable with riding and confident to step out of the ring, you are ready for your first trip out. You will quickly learn to trust the quiet, balanced temperament of our horses. The ideal combination of riding lessons and outings are individually-based. Each evening your riding instructor will discuss the next day's lesson with you.

Satellite and Trail Rides for Experienced Riders

Discover the beauty of Tuscany on the back of one of our friendly and sturdy horses. Does a holiday to you mean being in the saddle for a half or whole day? Or how about a whole week riding from one place to the next? You have a choice! Satellite rides are a half-day ride from the Rifugio Prategiano. If you decide to go on a full-day ride, you simply return to the stable with your horse in the evening. If a two- or three-hour ride is good enough, then after the midday picnic you can change your horse for a seat in the bus that will drive you back to the hotel. Your horse will in turn be given to someone who has chosen to take part in the afternoon portion of the ride back to the hotel. The two 6-day trails are for destinations farther afield. Unlike the satellite rides, the horses will stay overnight where you arrive in the evening that day, while you will return to the familiar peace of the Rifugio Prategiano. Please prepare to arrive in time for these scheduled trail rides! If there are no planned trail rides that week, different satellite rides are offered Sunday to Friday.

Guided Mountain Bike Tours

The rough beauty of the landscape makes mountain biking in Maremma Tuscany a pure pleasure! Our guide will take you on incredible uphill hikes, to great views and some of the most amazing downhill trails. Above all, he will teach you how to master them. We have many different scheduled tours, feel free to tell us what you are looking for. Most of our tours are about 5 hour long trails. All of the trails are far away from asphalt roads and can be changed, shortened or lengthened, depending on your preferences. Four tours start and end at the Prategiano hotel. On these tours we will meet the trailriders and hikers for a picnic lunch. If you would like to spend a bike-free afternoon, you can get a ride back to the hotel with the picnic bus. If you want to go mountain biking along the sea, as well as enjoy the area around the Etruscan hot springs of Saturnia, we can take the bikes to our starting point with the minibus for two day hikes. Bring your own bike or rent one of our high quality, front suspended mountain bikes! It goes without saying that a space for keeping your bicycle is at your disposal. Also, we have a place for bike-cleaning, as well as the possibility of getting assistance with small repairs.
